1. Education
High School Diploma or GED: This is the minimum educational requirement for most medical biller positions.
Medical Billing and Coding Certification: Employer prefer candidates who have completed a certification program in medical billing and coding, which can be obtained through accredited institutions.
Some recognized certifications include:
Certified Professional Biller (CPB)
Certified Professional Coder (CPC)
Certified Billing and Coding Specialist (CBCS)
2. Experience:
Entry-level positions may not require prior experience, but 1-2 years of experience in medical billing or a related healthcare administrative role is often preferred.
Experience with medical billing software such as Kareo, Epic, or NextGen is often desirable.
3. Knowledge of Medical Terminology:
Familiarity with ICD-10, CPT, and HCPCS coding systems.
Understanding of insurance claims processing and reimbursement procedures, including Medicare, Medicaid, and private insurance.
Knowledge of HIPAA regulations and patient confidentiality.
4. Technical Skills:
Proficiency in medical billing software and Electronic Health Record (EHR) systems.
Basic to intermediate knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel) and general computer skills.
5. Attention to Detail:
Ability to review and correct coding errors, track payments, and resolve billing discrepancies.
Strong organizational skills to manage billing for multiple patients or cases simultaneously.
6. Communication and Interpersonal Skills:
Excellent written and verbal communication to interact with patients, healthcare providers, and insurance companies.
Customer service skills for explaining billing issues to patients and handling disputes.
7. Ability to Work Independently:
Medical billers often work independently and must manage their time effectively while meeting deadlines.
8. Other Requirements:
Some positions may require knowledge of medical billing regulations in New York.
Bilingual skills are preferred, especially in languages like Spanish, can be a plus in diverse areas of NYC.
