Editor/Reporter – daytime/evening hours -- U.S. news publication

Bay City News is seeking a Filipino reporter/editor to write and edit news stories in the U.S. (California, San Francisco Bay Area). Strong American-English skills are required. Journalism experience and training preferred.

The editor will work independently two to three days per week from 4 – 12 p.m. PDT (or 7 a.m. - 3 p.m. PHT) including Saturday and Sunday weekend shifts PT (which would be Sunday and Monday shifts PHT). A keen interest in and good knowledge of the SF Bay Area is helpful. Must be an independent self-starter who is comfortable with research, reporting, writing and editing news stories that are accurate and verified.

Bay City News Service is a 24/7 newswire that reports on breaking news, traffic, weather, disasters, public events, crime, courts, government decisions, newsmakers and the local issues that matter to the greater San Francisco Bay Area’s nearly 9 million residents. We write lots of short, accurate, well-sourced news briefs every day as well as longer stories that get used by TV, radio, print and digital clients. We use AP (Associated Press) style so familiarity with those guidelines is important.

Candidate profile:
• Advanced competence in researching, writing, editing and reporting news stories
• Strong American English verbal and written communication skills dealing with sources, clients and colleagues
• Ability to meet short deadlines with an eye for detail and accuracy, writing an average of one short brief or story (Upgrade to see actual infowords) every 1-2 hours.
• Ability to adapt to new technologies as the business adopts new platforms, usually Microsoft-based tools or WordPress-based platforms
• Experience with social media related to news monitoring, fact checking and source development in a very competitive media region and posting of links to our work
• Journalism experience a strong plus
• Comfortable curating stories from our local non-profit and news partners with good judgment about audience needs for information about the SF Bay Area
• Must have a strong work ethic and be on time since these shifts cover specific time periods
